The Lost Trail

Many people are unaware of the obscure fact that a horse and buggy wagon trail existed that connected Harbison Canyon with Suncrest.  The long-forgotten route was “rediscovered” in 1940 by Jerry Schultz and Chuck Shaw when they were on horseback hunting/collecting snakes and orange-throat lizards for his reptile studies class at San Diego State College

The faint, winding trail led past the springs located in the east canyon of Jenkins’ Echo Ranch and continued on a steadily increasingly high path that snaked up shallow canyons, and eventually reached the pass at Suncrest Blvd, just south of Shaw’s grape vineyard near the present day Catholic Church.

Subsequently the photos were viewed by an archivist at the Serra Historical Museum located in Presidio Park, in Old Town.  Their records were minimal but did document the fact that such an ancient wagon route did indeed exist.  The actual route of the old trail was indicated on a US Government Topographical Survey map.
